Every
Disciple has a Vocation!
This is the vision of the Office of Vocations.
We take our mission very seriously: to help the
people of God of the Diocese of Bridgeport to fulfill the mission of Christ
as disciples of the Lord, and find the specific life through which they
will fulfill His mission, their vocation. Every disciple has a vocation,
whether Married Life, Priesthood, Religious Life or a Single Consecrated
Life. By teaching about and helping and nurturing all the vocations, we
hope to help build a missionary context within the Diocese of Bridgeport,
where every disciple will seek to fulfill the mission of Christ every
day.
We
work in cooperation with the Catholic Schools, Religious Education Programs,
and Youth Ministry especially through the Catholic Schools Office and
Office of Christian Formation of the diocese. We serve not only priestly
and religious vocations, but help Marriage and Family and Single vocations
fulfill their calling and consecration as well!
Men
and women will find support at the Office of
Vocations primarily for the discernment of vocations to the priestly life
for men and religious life for men and women through the resources of
our office and what is provided through this website. We hope to serve
every man and woman who desire to seriously discern what God's plan is
for their lives, which is simply what the greatest joy of their soul is.
For
the Priesthood of the Diocese of Bridgeport we
are helping people hear God's call who are faithful and zealous Catholic
young men between the ages of 18 and 40 who feel called by the Lord to
serve as parish priests in the Diocese of Bridgeport. After one or more
years of initial formation at the St. John Fisher Seminary, seminarians
complete four years of graduate theological studies at Catholic University
(Washington D.C.), Mount Saint Mary's Seminary (Maryland), North American
College (Rome), Pope John XXIII Seminary (Massachusetts), or St. Joseph
Seminary (New York).
Over
the last 11 years, from 1995 to 2005, the Diocese of Bridgeport ordained
53 men as diocesan priests. There are presently 24 men in formation as
seminarians of the Diocese of Bridgeport.
The
Saint John Fisher Seminary is a house discernment,
spiritual formation and study operated by the Diocese of Bridgeport in
Stamford, CT. Founded in 1989, the Fisher Residence welcomes both graduate
and undergraduate students who wish to discern a possible priestly vocation.
Graduate students complete a Pre-Theology program in philosophy, theology
and classical languages, taught at the Fisher Residence and accredited
by St. John's University in New York. Undergraduate students live at the
Fisher Residence while pursuing their college degrees at Fordham University
in Bronx, NY, Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT or other area schools.
