BRIDGEPORT - “The renewal of priestly commitment invites us to be renewed from the inside,” Bishop Lori told almost 300 of his brother priests at the Chrism Mass celebrated at St. Augustine Cathedral on Wednesday of Holy Week.

More than 700 priests, deacons, parishioners, students filled the historic cathedral in downtown Bridgeport for this year’s Chrism Mass in which the sacred oils are blessed and priests renew their commitment to ministry.

Bishop Lori thanked the clergy for their “priestly service and goodness” and told them that the priesthood was a “beautiful vocation” that transformed the priest beyond his natural capacities by being one with Christ.

“Imitate the mysteries you celebrate,” the Bishop said. He also asked for their help  during the year to prepare the faithful for the use of the New Roman Missal and to evangelize people about the importance of the Eucharist.

During the annual Chrism Mass, the Bishop consecrates the Holy Oils that are used in liturgical services including Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders and anointing the sick throughout the year.  After being blessed by the Bishop in the presence of Diocesan priests,  the holy oils are distributed to priests for use in their parishes.

“Are you resolved to unite yourselves more closely to Christ and to try to become more like Him by joyfully sacrificing  your own please and ambition to bring his Peace and love you your brothers and sisters?” the Bishop asked as part of the traditional Renewal of Commitment.
