Holy Spirit School in Stamford had fun celebrating Catholic Schools Week 2012. We held Mass, open houses, and activities for students, faculty, families and special friends. In addition to our academic schedule, some activities planned included student/teacher appreciation day, international cultural programs and fun filled sporting events.
Holy Spirit started the week off with a prayer service, and by mid week we were gathering together for a school breakfast enjoyed by all. Children were able to participate in a sports attire dress down day to support our student council, and parent volunteers helped students make customized appreciation cards for their homeroom teachers.
Holy Spirit School also spends the month of January participating in our annual cultural program in which the students study different countries from around the world. Each grade chooses a country to learn about its history, culture, language, and more. Students studied and shared their findings with each other. Learning about seven countries in all, we ranged from the rainforests of Madagascar to the religious history of Vacation City. We ended our international activities in correlation with Catholic Schools week concluding with an International Food Festival, where, with the help of parent volunteers, students sampled foods from Mexico, Ireland, Italy, Madagascar, Vatican City, Romania, and China. A “Passports from Around the World” day was also held where students visited each classroom sharing what they learned; and a Cultural Cabaret where students performed songs and dances and shared facts from their various countries.
Concluding the week students attended and participated in Friday Mass where Father Hyl, our Pastor, reminded us of the importance of our faith, our academics, and our service to others. We followed Mass with a family, friends, and alumni brunch hosted by the faculty and staff, and ended the day with our traditional 5th grade student vs. teacher's volleyball game in which for the first time in 5 years the students won!
