2012 Appeal off to good start
March 26, 2012

BRIDGEPORT—The 2012 Annual Bishop’s Appeal has already gone over the $4.5 million mark thanks to early generous donors.

“Every gift to the Appeal is given through the light of faith, and as such it truly serves as a beacon of hope for the individuals and families who benefit from the Appeal,” says Bishop William E. Lori. “We are all called to serve in charity, and the Appeal is the collective expression of that call to love and service in our diocese.”

More than 9,800 people have already made donations to the Appeal. “We’re off to a good start,” says Bishop Lori. “We’re very encouraged by the early response but we have a long way to go and we need everyone to participate in order to make this year’s campaign a success.”

Pam Rittman, director of the Bishop’s Appeal, says that last year’s Appeal saw an increase in the size of gifts along with a doubling of online giving, and campaign officials hope to see that trend continue this year.

Among the highlights of the services in this year’s Appeal, Catholic Charities has provided more than 3.2 million meals to the poor since 2009 and has completed more than 50,000 counseling sessions, many of which were provided to those who are uninsured. The St. Cyril of Jerusalem Adult Education Program became available on DVD, and thousands of public school children received religious education through our parishes. Vocations have increased, with 40 men from Fairfield County now enrolled in major and minor seminaries.

This year those who donate will be treated to a special “Thank you” gift from Bishop Lori. By visiting the diocesan website (www.bridgeportdiocese.com), they will be able to download “The Mysteries of the Rosary,” led by Bishop Lori. The production is provided courtesy of the Knights of Columbus.
