ODYSSEY REACHES OUT TO THE HOMELESS – Al Barber, chief
executive officer of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Bridgeport accepts
a $75,000 check from Oddyssey America Reinsurance Holdings Corp representatives
Dolores M. Grossman of Stamford, executive secretary, and R.
Scott Donovan, CFO. The grant, directed to Charities Supportive Housing
efforts, is the second major grant Catholic Charities has received from the
worldwide insurance company, which has over 240 local employees working
at its Stamford headquarters. “Their ongoing and fervent support for the work
of Catholic Charities and, in particular, our supportive housing efforts in
Bridgeport, is marvelous,” said Barber.
CATHOLIC CHARITIES HOMES – These townhouse at 52-168 Catherine
Street (around the corner from Merton Center) will become new homes for six
families. This site is a very short walk to the Merton Center Campus and the same
services will be available to residents of both facilities. Work is also well underway
on 16 apartment units now under construction in the present parking lot adjoining
the Merton Center soup kitchen on Madison Ave. in Bridgeport.
The project will provide two-and three-bedroom apartments for the working poor
and others of all faiths at risk of homelessness because of low incomes or other barriers
to housing. Mutual Housing Association will be the owner of record for these
newly developed units, and support services will be provided through Catholic
Charities of Fairfield County in a collaborative and cooperative relationship.
Mutual Housing Association will also be the on-site property manager.
