The Diocese of Bridgeport launched National Catholic Schools Week in style with the recent “Breakfast of Champions” held at the Catholic Center to honor scholars and scholar-athletes for their achievements. What better way to celebrate the importance of Catholic schools than to feature the young people with all their dreams and promises.

But that is only a part of the story. Catholic education is also about the sacrifice of parents and the vitality of the Catholic Church in the lives of yet another generation of the faithful. The pride on the faces of the parents and the hope on the faces of the students speak volumes about the gift of Catholic schools. Bishop Lori summed it up when he said, “We are proud of the students who have achieved so much. We are even prouder of their life of faith and virtue.”

Bishop William E. Lori awarded the St. Thomas Aquinas Medal at the annual Breakfast of Champions, recognizing students for academic excellence and living a life that exemplifies the Catholic faith through service to others. Above, Kathryn O’Neill, daughter of St. Andrew Principal Maria O’Neill, receives the medal from Bishop Lori.

Right, Kolbe-Cathedral senior Shennel Gelin is joined by her mom and dad. A total of 42 medals were awarded to students from the 39 Catholic schools throughout Fairfield County. Over 11,000 students attend a Catholic school in Fairfield County.

Bishop William E. Lori and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Margaret Dames also recognized high school senior athletes and state championship team captains with the St. Sebastian Medal at the annual Breakfast of Champions.

Team Captains are Russell Renfer, Antonio Civitella and Nicholas Pulaski of St. Joseph High School; and Anne Riddle and Emily DaSilva of Immaculate High School. Over 2,000 students attend a diocesan high school in Fairfield County. Bishop Lori praised the students and thanked them for the “example they share in our Catholic schools.”
